    How to Join Indian Army After 10th?

    Generally, a candidate can also join the army right after completing their 10th std and securing an aggregate mark of at least 40 % to 45%. However, they can only apply for two posts:

     

    Soldier Tradesman

    General Dutys

    The selection will be based on the physical fitness test, a written exam and a medical test which will be conducted by the Indian Army. 

     

    How To Join Army After Class 12th? Know All the Possible Ways to Join Indian Army

     

    When you think of how to join the Indian Army after class 12th, two viable options come to the front – one is to go for the Regular Army and the other is to go for the Territorial Army. The regular army is a full-time affair, while Territorial Army is more like a part-time thing where you can be a part of the Army when called upon during emergencies and national calamities.

     

    The Territorial Army is a very important element of the Indian Army apart from the Regular Army which has been set up to create a Citizen Army that would be able to share its helping hand while natural calamities or other emergencies hit our country.

     

    Once you have decided which option you would like to go with, you can apply for that very option.

     

    But How Do You Apply to the Indian Army After Class 12th?

    There are two ways in which you can join the Indian Army after class 12th standard examination –

     

    National Defence Academy Examination

    Technical Entry Scheme Examination

    Indian Army Rallies

    1: National Defence Academy Examination (NDA)

     

    The first answer for how to join the army after call 12th is through NDA. National Defence Academy (NDA) is a premium training academy for Army aspirants and the common entrance examination for NDA is conducted all over India for Indian Army aspirants as well as for Indian Navy and Air Force aspirants. The selection process for Army is conducted at three levels – one has to clear NDA written examination then move to the Services Selection Board Interview Round and after the interview round, candidates are moved to medical testing. On the basis of scores of all three, the final merit list is published. The selected candidates are moved for 3 years of training where they are even taught B.Sc. with specialization of their choices.

     

    Eligibility Criteria for NDA

    Age: Candidates should be between 16 ½ to 19 ½ years old during the commencement of the training.

    Sex: Only unmarried male candidates can apply for the examination.

    Educational Qualifications: Candidates should have passed the 10+2 level examination or any equivalent examination from a recognized board in India. Those who are currently appearing for class 12th board examinations can also apply for NDA examinations.

    Physical Standards: Candidates should fulfill physical standards as prescribed by National Defence Academy Examination guidelines.

    Training Academy Qualification Cut-off Age (at the starting of the course) Sex

    NDA Qualified class 12th examination from a recognized board of India N/A 16.5 – 19.5 Male

    2: Technical Scheme Examination (TSS)

    Students who want to join the Indian Army after class 12th can also get through by qualifying for the Technical Scheme Examination and the interview conducted by the Services Selection Board. Once candidates are selected, they are enrolled in a Bachelor of Engineering course in streams of their choice and are trained for the Lieutenant rank in the Army. The complete training is for four years on completion of which one gets commissioned into the Army and is awarded the Lieutenant rank.

     

    The applications are shortlisted on the basis of marks scored in 10+2 level and then candidates are called upon for screening through various stages – group discussions, psychology test, and personal interview. Candidates who will be recommended by the Services Selection Board and deemed as mentally and physically fit will be finally selected for training.

     

    Eligibility Criteria for TSS

    Age: Candidates should be between 16 ½ to 19 ½ years old during the commencement of the training.

    Sex: Only unmarried male candidates can apply for the examination.

    Educational Qualifications: Candidates should have passed the 10+2 level examination or any equivalent examination with at least 70% aggregate in Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics from a recognized board in India.

    Physical Standards: Candidates should fulfill medical standards as prescribed by the examination authority.

    Vacancy: The vacancy for the 2021 Technical Entry Scheme is 90

     

    Technical Entry Scheme ( TES)

    Candidates can also join the Indian Army by giving the Technical Scheme Examination. Only unmarried male candidates who have passed their 12th standard in physics, chemistry and mathematics can apply for this examination. Here, the candidates are assessed on the basis of their 10 + 2 scores after which they will be required to appear for an interview conducted by the Services Selection Board. 

     

    The selected candidates are then enrolled in a B.E Course in a stream of their choice and they are trained for a period of 4 years for the rank of lieutenant in the army. On completion of the course, the cadet will be granted permanent commission in the Army and will be given the rank of lieutenant. 

     

    Please note that only unmarried male candidates between the age of 16 ½ and 19 1/2 , who have completed their 12th in physics, chemistry and mathematics with an aggregate 70 % can apply for this examination. 

     

    How can Women Join Indian Army?

     

     

    It was in the year 1992 that women were allowed to formally be a part of the Indian Army and serve their country, Till now, more than 1200 Women Cadets have been commissioned into the various sections of the Indian Army. You can find below the ways in which women can also join the Indian Army :

     

    UPSC Entry/ Short Service Commission ( Non-Technical ) 

    Non UPSC Entry

    Short Service Commission (NCC)

    Short Service Commission ( Judge Advocate General)

    UPSC Entry ( Technical )

    UPSC Entry/ Short Service Commission ( Non-Technical)

    Here, women who do not have a background in engineering come under the short service commission ( Non-Technical) category. They are selected through a written examination. The cadets who have successfully cleared the written exam will appear for an interview round with the Services Selection Board. 

     

    The eligibility criteria are as follows :

     

    Unmarried Female candidates between the ages of 19 to 25 may apply.

    They must also graduate from a recognised university and board. 

    They must pass the Combined Defence Service Examination which is conducted twice in a year by UPSC

    On the basis of merit, 12 women will be selected every 6 months and they are inducted into training. After clearing the CDS, selected candidates will undergo 49 weeks of rigorous training at the OTA ( Officers Training Academy) in Chennai. 

    Non-UPSC Entry 

    Under the NON-UPSC Entry, women can enter into the Indian Army either through the NCC Special Entry or Judge Advocate General

     

    NCC Special Entry

    This is a method of direct entry for women wherein they don’t need to give any entrance exam. The eligibility criteria are as follows :

     

    Unmarried female candidates between the ages of 19 to 25 may apply

    They must have a minimum of 50% in graduation with a valid NCC ‘C’ certificate with minimum ‘B’ grade. 

    Four women are recruited and sent for training at the OTA in Chennai

    They will undergo a rigorous training of 49 weeks. 

    Judge Advocate General

    The Joint Advocate General is a branch in the Indian Army which is responsible for providing legal help to the military especially concerning matters related to court-martials and military law. The eligibility criteria is as follows :

     

    Unmarried Female LLB between the ages of 21-27 may apply

    The female must have graduated LLB with 55% marks and be a member of the Bar Council of India or passed a law course which is recognised by the Bar Council of India.

    Every six months, 4 women are selected by the Advocate General Branch

    After a brief Induction, they are trained for a period of 49 weeks

    UPSC Entry ( Technical)

    This is a direct entry for those women who come from an engineering background. There will be no written exam under this entry. The selection is done solely on the basis of merit. 

     

    Eligibility Criteria

     

    Unmarried Female between the ages of 21-27 may apply

    The cut-off for merit varies from year to year. 

    Twenty women are selected every 6 months based on the merit list.

    The training is of 49 weeks held at OTA Chennai and they will be joining as Short Service Commission Officers. 

    Qualifying Exams
